"Reporting on the death of a child is an assignment reporters dread. That dread multiplied exponentially late Monday afternoon as the tragedy at Red Lake unfolded and Star Tribune reporters and photographers headed north to the reservation.

To tell the story of young lives lost requires talking to those who know the subject best: friends and family. They, of course, are still raw with the shock and pain of losing a loved one. For reporters and photographers -- many of whom are parents themselves -- it takes thoughtfulness and compassion to work in that environment without causing further harm.

This already difficult situation was made even worse this past week by Red Lake Reservation officials and tribal police, who placed harsh restrictions on the movements of journalists trying to cover one of the most tragic moments in the state's history."
