The use of mascots like Chief Wahoo and the Redskins shows that racism against Native Americans continues, Native activist Juanita Helphrey says.
Helphrey spent several years fighting the Chief Wahoo mascot of the Cleveland Indians. She lobbied to have the name changed but said team officials "lied to us [and] spoke from both sides of their mouths."
Helphrey, a Hidatsa from North Dakota, was the director of the Office of Justice and Witness Ministries of the United Church of Christ. She has returned home to North Dakota.
