Voters in San Diego County, California, are being asked to overturn approval of a landfill opposed by the Pala Band of Mission Indians.
The tribe and its allies are backing Proposition B on the November 2 ballot. They say the Gregory Canyon landfill will pollute the water supply and harm sacred sites.
The tribe has spent about $2.6 million on the initiative, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports. The landfill developers have spent $2.63 million.
Voters previously approved the landfill in 1994 but the tribe and environmental groups say new information warrants a second vote.
