The mediator in the Oneida Nation land claim has requested an extension to continue negotiations.
Mediator John Tabner said progress was made at a last meeting with 18 lawyers on Friday, The Syracuse Post-Standard reported. A lawyer for the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, one of the parties to the claim, agreed progress occurred.
The claim involves the Oneidas of New York, Wisconsin and Canada. They say the state stole 250,000 acres from them.
The New York Oneidas reached a settlement with the state but did not involve the other tribes. Gov. George Pataki (R) has since softened his objection to dealing with out-of-state tribes.
