Judge extends term of Oneida land claim mediator
Thursday, December 11, 2003

The federal judge overseeing the Oneida Nation's long-running land claim has given a mediator more time to work out an agreement.

The mediator has been working since May 2002. He is trying to resolve issues between three Oneida tribes, two counties and the state.

The tribes are challenging the taking of 250,000 acres by the state. The Oneidas of New York and Gov. George Pataki (R) have come to a settlement but the other tribes weren't involved. The Bush administration has also rejected the proposal.
