Oneida Nation land claim talks at standstill

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2003 Local officials in upstate New York say they haven't heard a thing about a settlement to the Oneida Nation land claim. A year ago, the tribe and Gov. George Pataki (R) said they had come to an historic agreement to end the dispute over 250,000 acres of land. But the Oneida tribes in Wisconsin and Canada, also parties to the land claims suit, blasted the deal because they weren't involved. A federal mediator is overseeing talks, which are said to be confidential. A lawyer for the Oneida of Wisconsin says the tribe hopes for a resolution. Get the Story:
