Wis. Oneidas use ad to urge land claim settlement

The Oneida Nation of Wisconsin is using a one-minute radio advertisement to urge settlement of the long-running Oneida land claim. The tribe is part of a 250,000-acre lawsuit against the state of New York and two counties. Listeners are told to call on Gov. George Pataki (R) to settle the case. But the Oneidas of New York, also a party to the suit, aren't happy with the ad, a spokesperson said. It's "another part of [their] desperate campaign to sell their birthright for a casino in the Catskills," Mark Emery told The Syracuse Post-Standard. The Wisconsin Oneidas are willing to settle the claim for casino rights. The tribe wants to open one of three facilities in the Catskills. The New York Oneidas don't think their cousins have rights in the state. They moved to settle the case without consulting the Oneidas of Wisconsin or Canada. Get the Story:
