TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2002 The Oneida Nation of Wisconsin is protesting an agreement to settle a long standing claim over 250,000 acres of land in New York, and plans on filing new lawsuits against individual landowners. The Oneida Nation of New York has agreed to settle the 30-year-old case for $500 million and a reservation of 35,000 acres. The Wisconsin are protesting because the reservation would be made up of purchase land and doesn't involve any transferred land. The New York Oneida would also collect sales tax on all business transactions. The tribe would contribute 50-50 to a $100 million fund to reimburse local governments for lost taxes. Of the settlement amount, $225 million would go to the New York Oneida, $250 million to the Wisconsin and $25 million to the Oneida First Nation in Ontario. Get the Story:
