The Bureau of Indian Affairs will reject an off-reservation casino for the Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohican Indians of Wisconsin, The Middletown Times Herald Record reports.
The paper said the BIA informed the tribe earlier this week that it will reject a Class III gaming compact for the casino. A letter could be sent as early as today.
The tribe signed the compact last November. It would have authorized a casino in the Catskills, an area near New York City.
The deal has been controversial because it was tied to a land claim settlement. Other tribes in New York and non-Indian gaming interests oppose the casino.
