Stockbridge-Munsee off-reservation casino facing big odds at DOI

It looks like the Obama administration is raising serious doubts about the off-reservation casino proposed by the Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohican Indians of Wisconsin.

The tribe signed a Class III gaming compact and a land claim settlement with the state of New York. The compact has been submitted to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for approval but the tribe said the settlement doesn't need to be ratified by Congress, as is common practice in similar cases.

For that reason, the Interior Department and the Justice Department have said approval of the casino is "highly unlikely," according to a lawyer for the tribe.
