Shinnecock Nation sees opposition to casino from local groups

The Shinnecock Nation of New York wants to discuss a casino with leaders in the town of Brookhaven but they already say they oppose the idea.

The tribe has considered the Brookhaven Calabro Airport and other locations in the town. The Affiliated Brookhaven Civic Organization, which represents 23 local groups, voted against a casino and will hold a rally on Saturday.

"Casinos are a 24/7 operation," MaryAnn Johnston, the organization's president, told The North Shore Sun. "It's like having a 24/7 brightly lit 7-Eleven the size of Mohegan Sun."

The tribe's federal recognition, which becomes final next month, has stirred speculation about a casino.
