The Shinnecock Nation of New York ran into opposition a few years ago when it tried to build a casino. But now that the tribe is closer to federal recognition, politicians and local residents are embracing the idea.
The tribe is open to a number of sites, a spokesperson said. Belmont Park, a racetrack on Long Island, appears to be gaining support as an ideal location for a casino.
"I think it's important for the community to decide, because it's going to affect their life," said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York), who has supported off-reservation casinos in the Catskills. "If you want to have that kind of economic growth, then you decide you do."
The tribe could build a casino on its reservation though infrastructure, location and residents are a concern.
