New York Gov. David
Paterson (D) said the Shinnecock Nation faces "numerous hurdles" in developing a gaming facility.
Earlier this week, Paterson said he wants to work with the tribe to find a casino site. But he's also trying to assure existing developers --namely, the ones that want to operate video gaming facility at the Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens -- that a tribal facility won't interfere with theirs.
'The State intends to protect its financial interest in existing and planned facilities," Paterson's office said in a statement. "The Shinnecock Indian Nation has numerous hurdles to clear be before it could develop a casino off-reservation and we do not expect that it will have a major impact on the Aqueduct casino."
Paterson didn't identify any of the hurdles but the tribe needs to have land in trust for a casino. The tribe also needs to negotiate a Class III gaming compact with the state.
