Renzi: Piestewa fought to save lives of others

THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2003 Arizona Congressman Rick Renzi (R) offered more details about the actions of Lori Piestewa, the Hopi woman killed in action in Iraq. Renzi told The Arizona Republic that Piestewa fought "tooth and nail" when her Army unit was ambushed in southern Iraq. Piestewa was driving a truck carrying unit members and stayed with a sergeant so the others could get out of the vehicle, he said. "She fought back with her weapon and she was involved in one of the fiercest portions of the fight," Renzi told the paper. The unit was attacked March 23. Renzi did not say whether Piestewa died during the attack or sometime after it. Get the Story:
