Yellow Bird: Walking a different path

"When June Conklin Lockwood stepped up to the microphone at the funeral of her uncle and my relative, I thought how much she looked like an elder - the lines of character and the rounded middle. I had to smile to myself at the observation because she is my age: I see a mirror picture of myself.

The reflection stops at the similarities in looks and age. She has gone a different path than I.

June continued to grow in the Christian community after our lives took us in different directions. She has a good following and is a familiar figure at many community events. She and her husband were returning from Oklahoma, where they attended a revival, she told us. I, on the other hand, left the area and lived in places such as Oklahoma, Arizona, Oregon and Washington D.C. So, we didn't see much of each other after those early school years.

But even though we have lived very different lifestyles, our paths cross now and then. I admire her for the woman she has become. She has sung songs at every opportunity and used her talent to enrich the Christian teachings that she learned from her grandmother so many years ago."
