Hoopa Valley Tribe critical of DOI water offer
Wednesday, March 3, 2004

The Hoopa Valley Tribe of California met with Department of Interior officials on Tuesday to discuss water issues in the Klamath Basin.

The tribe has treaty and fishing rights on the Trinity River but nearly all of the water has been diverted to non-Indian users. The Clinton administration promised to restore flows but the non-Indians sued.

The tribe says Interior's latest proposal still favors non-Indians. The tribe blames the department's failed water policies on the deaths of 33,000 fish, mostly salmon, in the lower Klamath River.
