President Nez and Vice President Lizer congratulate U.S. Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs nominee Bryan Newland

The following is the text of an April 22, 2021, news release from the Navajo Nation Office of President and Vice President.
WINDOW ROCK, Arizona – Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer congratulate Bryan Newland, a citizen and former President of the Bay Mills Indian Community, for being nominated to serve as the next Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs under the U.S. Department of the Interior. The nomination was announced by the Department of the Interior as Newland joined First Lady Jill Biden on a visit to the capital of the Navajo Nation.
“We congratulate Mr. Newland on his nomination and we are pleased to welcome him and First Lady Biden to the Navajo Nation. With his extensive experience and knowledge, we are optimistic that he will work together with all tribes and partner with the Navajo Nation to advance new policies and policy changes that benefit our people and communities. We have a great working relationship with Secretary Haaland and we are happy to extend our welcome to Mr. Newland and we look forward to meeting with him on many issues. Congratulations to him and his family,” said President Nez.
Newland was appointed in February to serve as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs. Aside from serving as the President of the Bay Mills Indian Community, he also previously served as Chief Judge of the Bay Mills Tribal Court and as Counselor and Policy Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of the Interior. He is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Law.
“Second Lady Dottie Lizer and I congratulate Mr. Newland on his recent appointment, as the Navajo Nation continues to seek a stronger relationship to build up and out with our federal family. When the Nez-Lizer Administration took office in 2019, one of our top priorities was working with U.S Government officials, including DOI, as their responsibility consists of conserving and managing Native America. As the Vice President of Navajo Nation, I continue to put forth a bipartisanship effort for our Diné citizens. We pray for Mr. Newland as he begins his new endeavors with Secretary Halaand and Department of the Interior,” said Vice President Lizer.
President Nez and Vice President Lizer met briefly with Newland during his visit to the Navajo Nation capital on Thursday. Further discussions will follow.
