BIA to start selling horses rounded up from Crow Reservation

The Bureau of Indian Affairs will start selling horses that were rounded up with the help of the Crow Tribe of Montana.

The BIA paid the tribe $45,000 to round up 829 horses that used to belong to Jim Leachman, a non-Indian rancher who has been charged with animal cruelty. He failed to claim his animals within five days so they will go on sale this weekend.

The BIA says Leachman has to pay for the costs of the roundup and for the processing and sale of the horses. “We’re pretty close to six figures or $100,000,” superintendent Vianna Stewart told The Billings Gazette.
