Crow Tribe begins rounding up over 700 horses on reservation

The Crow Tribe of Montana began rounding more than 700 horses on the reservation under a contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

About 50 tribal members are gathering the horses. "This is a historic event," Jason Shigley, who is filming the event for the tribe, told The Billings Gazette. "The Crow people are horse people. Everything that has to do with the horse is in our makeup."

Most of the horses were owned by Jim Leachman, a non-Indian rancher who has been charged with animal cruelty. He has five days to claim his animals as he awaits trial in Yellowstone County.

If the horses aren't claimed, they will be sold on March 31 or possibly early April.
