BIA to pay Crow Tribe $45K to round up horses on reservation

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has entered into a contract with the Crow Tribe to round up an estimated 700 horses on the reservation.

Most of the horses are owned by Jim Leachman, a non-Indian rancher who has been charged with animal cruelty. Yellowstone County prosecutors say he his neglected his horses, which have shown signs of malnutrition, suffering and disease.

The tribe plans to round up the animals on March 21. The BIA has agreed to handle the sale of the horses.
