Jury acquits Oglala Sioux man for role in Aquash murder

A jury in federal court deliberated for less than two hours before delivering a not guilty verdict against Richard Marshall, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe who was accused in the murder ofAmerican Indian Movement activist Anna Mae Pictou Aquash.

The jury acquitted Marshall on charges that he aided and abetted Aquash's murder on the Pine Ridge Reservation in December 1975. Prosecutors alleged he had provided the gun that was used to kill Aquash.

Arlo Looking Cloud, also Oglala, was convicted for Aquash's murder in 2004. He is serving a life sentence in federal prison.

Two more people await a trial in state court for their role. John Graham is charged with premeditated murder, felony murder committed during a kidnapping and felony murder related to rape and Thelma Rios is charged with premeditated murder and felony murder committed during a kidnapping.

The state court trial is scheduled to start July 6.
