Yellow Bird: Adventures that stir the spirit
"There are adventurers in our region today who I envy.

Participants in the Red River International Bike Tour started biking on Monday, and even more intriguing are the two teen-age canoeists, Colton Witte and Sean Bloomfield, who paddled from Fort Snelling, Minn., to Hudson Bay.

The bike trip would teach you about muscles you didn’t know you had. But for me, it’s the canoe trip that calls; I picture just me, a river and maybe a friend. That stirs my spirit.

Freelance cartoonist Steve Edwards used to come into the Herald to drop off his cartoons; and when he did, he stopped by my desk, and we talked biking. He is a biking enthusiast. He loves the open country, fresh air and friends.

One year, he told me, he and others rode a circle around Lake Sakakawea and the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. This year’s Red River International Bike Tour is five days long, and the 80-plus riders are pedaling through the Pembina Gorge to Manitoba and Minnesota for a 290-mile route.

Whew, it must be nice after such a trip to just sit and contemplate a soft, warm and comfortable chair."
