A man from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation was charged with assaulting a federal officer in an incident that injured a Bureau of Indian Affairs police officer.

Kelly C. Ward allegedly shot Sergeant Louis Troy Poitra, a member of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, in the leg on September 10. Poitra was responding to a domestic violence call on the reservation.

Ward was reportedly injured during the incident but his status has not been disclosed. Poitra is recovering from the shooting.

The BIA sent 20 officers to the reservation to deal with high crime rates.
