A Bureau of Indian Affairs officer who was shot on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation was responding to a domestic violence call, U.S. Attorney Marty Jackley said.

The officer was shot early Wednesday. Pat Ragsdale of the BIA said he wasn't seriously injured.

A second man was also shot at the scene. His identity and condition have not been made public.

The officer was sent to the reservation as part of a "surge" to reduce high crime rates. "Operation Dakota Peacekeeper" has been deemed a success but the BIA has pulled officers away from Standing Rock in order to address another law enforcement crisis on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
