A Bureau of Indian Affairs officer who was shot on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation is expected to fully recover, an official said today.

Sergeant Louis Troy Poitra, a member of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, was shot in the leg while responding to a domestic violence call in the early morning hours of September 10. Poitra was assigned to Standing Rock as part of "Operation Dakota Peacekeeper," a BIA initiative to reduce high crime rates on the reservation.

"We're very proud of Sgt. Poitra," Pat Ragsdale, the director of justice services at the BIA told the Senate Indian Affairs Committee at a hearing this morning. "He's one of our best."

The BIA has not released information about a reservation man who was shot during the incident.
