Soboba Band seeks state certification for officers
The Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians will seek state certification for its eight tribal security officers. Certification from California Police Officer Standards and Training would enable the tribal officers to enforce state law on the reservation. That could alleviate tensions between the tribe and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Three tribal members were shot and killed by sheriff's deputies during a one-week period in May. The tribe is now stopping all deputies to find out where they are going on the reservation. The sheriff's department claims it has an unlimited right to enter the reservation Public Law 280.
