County sheriff won't attend Soboba Band forum
The Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians is hosting a forum on August 11 to discuss Public Law 280 but one key local law enforcement official won't be there. Riverside County Sheriff Stanley Sniff said he already understands the law. He said it gives his officers access to any reservation at any time. The tribe disagrees and has been checking every officer who comes to the reservation. Three tribal members were killed by sheriff's deputies over a one-week period in early May. Public Law 280 was written during the termination era, as the federal government was trying to end its relationship with tribes. More than 50 years later, the law is still in dispute, an issue the Bureau of Indian Affairs is examining. Get the Story:
