"UND essentially sold its soul. In accepting the money to build and maintain Ralph Engelstad Arena, UND declared money was more important than principle. The issue of the logo already had been raised many times before the deal went down.
I do not have a solution. I do not advocate unequivocally for one side or the other. I do, however, want to offer another dimension that should be considered.
This issue is much bigger than just the Sioux and UND. I believe the discussion should be widened to include the Indians of northwestern Minnesota.
For many decades, the Chippewa lived peacefully as gardeners and hunters. The Sioux, after having been pushed by the Chippewa far to the south and the west - beyond what is now known as the Red River Valley - dared to re-enter the territory only for a quick raid or hunt.
In 1863-64 in the Old Crossing Treaty, the Chippewa bands were forced to cede 10 million acres. In fact, the land now occupied by the Engelstad Arena was Chippewa territory, not Sioux land.
Because of the treaty, Indian families were forced to move out of the ceded area to either the Turtle Mountains in North Dakota or to Red Lake in Minnesota."
