The University of North Dakota has three years to get the approval of Sioux tribes if it wants to keep the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.
But the name could go sooner if the state Board of Higher Education takes action. Board president John Paulsen said it's clear to him that the school won't get approval, given the opposition from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.
"The remarks in public of all the tribal leaders have, as far as I can tell, all been along the same lines. Tribal leaders don't see any need for, or anything to be gained from, further discussions. They've said UND, sooner rather than later, should change the logo," Paulsen told The Grand Forks Herald.
Back in 2000, it was the board that forced UND to keep the "Sioux" nickname and logo.
The school was considering giving up the name but the board pre-empted action and adopted a new version of the logo that was created by a Native artist.
