"A note to Fighting Sioux nickname supporters who are depressed about UND's settlement with the NCAA:
First, don't give up. Yes, it's true that Ron His Horse Is Thunder, tribal chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux, told Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem that the tribe is not going to change its position during the next three years or withdraw its resolution opposing the nickname.
But that's just a very well-educated guess on the chairman's part, just like it is when any person tries to predict the long-term future. His Horse Is Thunder's statement likely boosts the odds against UND keeping the nickname. But that's all anyone can offer right now: odds. Not certainty.
So, what are those odds? Suppose there's a 70 percent chance that either the Standing Rock or Spirit Lake tribe will oppose the nickname at the end of three years. Suppose the odds are even longer: Eighty percent. Ninety percent.
That's still not 100 percent, which seems to have been the odds UND would have had to change the nickname if the settlement hadn't been reached. "
