Ex-CIRI executive defends contractor in theft case

The former chief executive of Cook Inlet Region Inc. is defending a contractor accused of stealing $40 million from the Alaska Native regional corporation.

Former CEO Carl Marrs took the stand to defend John Ellsworth, who is accused of the theft. Marrs said he trusts Ellsworth even though Marrs never read any of the contracts between CIRI and Alaska Interstate Construction, the company owned by Ellsworth.

New executives at CIRI sued Ellsworth but Marrs said their suit is misguided. Nabors Industries, a partner of CIRI, is backing CIRI in the dispute.
