A gravel mine in the village of Eklutna is turning out to be good business for two Alaska Native corporations.
Eklutna Inc., a village corporation, owns the surface rights to the mine site. Cook Inlet Region Inc., a regional corporation, owns the subsurface rights.
Operations started this spring and the mine has already started supplying gravel for some big projects, including a Wal-Mart expansion and a new shopping mall. Up to 200 trucks leave the facility every day to bring gravel to construction sites.
The mine has drawn some complaints in the village over noise and dust.
