Corbin Harney, a spiritual leader of the Western Shoshone Nation, died on Tuesday of complications from cancer. He was 87.
Harney was an outspoken opponent of nuclear power. The Nevada Test Site was built on Shoshone treaty land and the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump is also on treaty land.
"Shoshone people have taken care of this land for thousands of years," he once said, The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. "The government has stole this land from us, and now it is very contaminated. For 50 years they have kept us out with fences and guards."
Harney was born in Idaho and spent most of his life in Nevada. He recently went to Santa Rosa, California, to finish a book. He died in a rural area of Santa Rosa.
