New Mexico governor seeks $12M for water rights

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (D) is seeking $12 million to pay the state's share of three tribal water rights settlements.

The state has reached deals with the Navajo Nation, Taos Pueblo and five other Pueblos (the Aamodt suit). The federal government is also a party but has balked at the cost of the settlements.

Overall, the three agreements are expected to cost $1.2 billion. The state's share could range from $66.5 million to $294 million. The federal government would pick up the rest.
