The $750 million Navajo Nation water rights settlement is ready for approval by the state of New Mexico and the federal government.
The New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission approved the deal unanimously yesterday. The Navajo Nation Council approved it late last month.
The state must sign off before it goes to Congress for final approval. Sens. Pete Domenici, (R) and Jeff Bingaman (D) are expected to introduce a bill to authorize the settlement.
Under the settlement, the tribe would receive about 600,000 acre-feet of water about 56 percent of the San Juan Basin's flow -- a year.
