Pueblo water rights settlement heads to Washington

Pueblo, state and local water users in northern New Mexico have all agreed to settle the long running Aamodt water-rights lawsuit.

The deal will resolve the rights of the pueblos of Namb, Pojoaque, San Ildefonso and Tesuque as well as non-Indian residents. To gain final support, the parties are going to Washington, D.C., in two weeks to lobby members of Congress and the Bush administration.

The settlement requires the creation of a regional water system. The Bush administration previously rejected a deal, citing the high cost of the system.

The parties hope the federal government will kick in $150 million towards the $172-177 million system.
