Settlement expected in water rights case
Wednesday, December 10, 2003

A settlement in a long-running water rights case affecting tribes in northern New Mexico is to be completed this month, The Santa Fe New Mexican reports.

The settlement would involve the creation of a regional water system, the paper said. Non-Indian users would give up their individual wells and four Pueblo tribes would give up their right to assert priority over other users.

In court papers, a federal judge mediating the case said the settlement should be ready by the end of the month. U.S. Judge Martha Vazquez expects to sign a settlement order by next summer.

The tribes involved are the pueblos of Pojoaque, Tesuque, San Ildefonso, and Nambe.
