The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota has two presidents but only one of them is in the tribal office.
President Alex White Plume vacated the office but says he is in charge. "Im still the president of the tribe, and the election will have to proceed," he told The Rapid City Journal.
President John Yellow Bird Steele took over the office and says he is ready to work. "I intend to get on with the business of the tribe as soon as possible because of important issues confronting us such as the trust-fund mismanagement cases, tribal finances and other important matters," he said.
White Plume said one of the reasons he left was that some of Steele's staff was hostile to him. But since both have common grandchildren, they are on friendly terms.
