Efforts to resolve the recent election of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota at an impasse, with one side scheduling new elections while another side prepares to be sworn in.
Current president Alex White Plume says a new primary and general election will be held in 2007. But the winners of the recent November 7 election say they will take office next week.
White Plume moved to call a new election because he was removed from the ballot on November 7. He has a criminal record that bars him from holding tribal office but says the ban shouldn't be applied retroactively.
John Yellow Bird Steele, a former president, won the November 7 election. The swearing-in ceremony is set for Tuesday.
