The outgoing president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota wants a new election where he is on the ballot.
Alex White Plume was taken off the ballot days before the November 7 election. He had an old
conviction that barred him holding office under tribal law.
White Plume has acknowledged his felony indictment, which was pleaded down to a misdemeanor. But he says he shouldn't come under the tribal law because it was passed in 1999, and his conviction is from 1982.
The change in ballot cost White Plume his office. Voters elected former president John Yellow Bird Steele over Cecelia Fire Thunder, another former president.
