Indian educator watches program spring to life

Everall Fox, a member of the Gros Ventre Tribe, was the only Indian education specalist at the Montana Office of Public Instruction when the state Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling.

The court said the state must fund the Indian Education for All Act so that public schools can teach about Indian history and culture. The decision prompted action from lawmakers and from OPI, which quickly went to work to develop a curriculum and other programs.

"It's a really exciting chapter in my life because I get to see it from the development of the policy all the way to the implementation of it - to see what we dreamed of happening come to fruition," Fox told The Billings Gazette.

Fox now works for the Billings School District 2 as director of Indian Education for All. He works with the Crow Tribe and the Northern Cheyenne Tribe to develop teaching materials.
