The Billings Gazette is running a week-long special report on Indian education.
Today's story focuses on the funding issues faced by schools on the reservation. Since the schools lack a tax base, they rely on federal funds, outside grants and extra help from the state to survive.
On Monday, the paper looked at the recruitment of Indian teachers. On the Fort Peck Reservation, the Fort Peck Community College works with three state universities to increase the number of Indian teachers.
On Sunday, the No Child Left Behind Act and state achievement levels were the subject of two stories. Of the 33 schools that failed to make the Department of Education's cut, 32 were on reservations.
The series runs through Friday.
