The state of New Mexico has opened offices at three Indian Health Service facilities.
The offices will help tribal members enroll in federal programs like Food Stamps and Medicaid.
The first locations are the Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock; the Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup; and the Crownpoint Health Care Facility in Crownpoint.
"It's good," GloJean Todacheene, vice-president of Shiprock Chapter and council delegate electee, told The Farmington Daily Times. "That way people don't have to drive around looking for other buildings. The services are right there in the hospital."
The program started with a pilot project at the Gallup facility, with a staffer who speaks Navajo.
The state hopes to expand the program to serve other tribes in New Mexico.
