South Dakota voters resoundingly rejected the state's highly restrictive abortion law on Tuesday.

With 91 percent of the state's precincts reporting, 55 percent opposed the abortion ban while 45 percent supported it, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported.

The law would have barred abortions in every case except to save a woman's life. There would be no exceptions for rape, incest or other health issues.

Indian women rallied for an against the ban. Cecilia Fire Thunder, the former president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, lost her job for criticizing the law.
