Cecilia Fire Thunder, the ousted president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, came in third in Tuesday's primary election, according to unofficial results.
Fire Thunder hoped to regain her post after being impeached in June. She was ousted after speaking against the state's highly restrictive abortion law.
President Alex White Plume, her replacement, and John Steele, a former president, garnered the most votes in the primary. But White Plume said about a third of the votes are being challenged.
The general election is November 7.
