Editorial: Crow Tribe hosts historic gathering

"[Lewis] Clark never saw Crow people on his journey in 1806. Two hundred years later, the Crow Tribe is playing a major role in the Clark on the Yellowstone Signature Event that commemorates the bicentennial of Clark's Yellowstone Voyage. And the tribe organized a four-day event to focus on Crow history and culture. "Empowering the Crow Way of Life -- Peace Through Unity" was scheduled to wrap up today in Crow Agency.

This weekend, the Crow Tribe plans an encampment at Pompeys Pillar National Monument. And the tribe is hosting other Montana Indian tribal representatives who plan to gather for the bicentennial observance. In song, dance and oral history as well as an Indian arts market and buffalo feed, Indian people will share their stories along the Yellowstone this week, stories that Clark never heard, stories integral to the history of our region. In a state that has been struggling to provide Indian Education for All in its public schools, there is a once-a-century opportunity this week to learn about the rich cultures and histories of our region.

If the vision of peace, prosperity and opportunity for everyone in this beautiful valley is to be fulfilled in our time, people must listen and learn from those who have different stories to tell. Take this opportunity to learn more about the place and people where we Montanans live."
