Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio), one of several members of Congress linked to the Jack Abramoff scandal, initially denied knowing of the Tigua Tribe of Texas despite being heavily involved with efforts to reopen the tribe's casino.
In a November 12, 2004, interview with the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, "Congressman Ney said he was not at all familiar with the Tigua" and didn't recall meeting with the tribe.
But evidence produced to the committee and testimony from tribal leaders directly contradicted Ney's claim.
Ney, in fact, had agreed to insert a provision into an elections reform bill to help the Tiguas reopen their casino. He spoke with tribal leaders by phone at least two times, according to the committee's final report on the investigation that was released yesterday.
But a spokesperson said Ney told the committee he was unfamiliar with the name "Tigua" because his calendar stated he was meeting with the "Taqua."
Ney faces possible legal action for his role in the scandal. The committee's report notes that interviewees who were not placed under oath could be prosecuted for violating the False Statements Act and other laws.
