The Yakama Nation of Washington has formed its own utility company to provide power to the reservation.
Earlier this year, the tribe purchased power lines and equipment already situated on the reservation. Yakama Power now provides electricity to tribal agencies and some reservation homes.
Yakama Power buys its electricity directly from the federal Bonneville Power Administration. Only one other tribe in the Pacific Northwest has its own utility.
