Yakama Nation debates future of basketball team

Members of the Yakama Nation of Washington are expected to vote today on whether to retain ownership of a minor league basketball team.

The tribal council bought the Yakama Sun Kings last June. The purchase sparked an outcry among tribal members, who said they weren't consulted. They ousted three council members in protest of the deal.

Since then, the team has received some support, said general council chairman Philip Olney. But some are questioning whether the tribe is going to make any money.

Sun Kings general manager Rich Austin is expected to give a financial report on the team today, after which the vote would be held, The Yakima Herald-Republic reports.
