The Bureau of Indian Affairs held a public hearing on the Cayuga Nation's land-into-trust application.
According to The Syracuse Post-Standard, an overwhelming number of speakers opposed the tribe's request. Some people held signs reading "One nation" and "No land in trust." One person led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.
The tribe filed the application in response to a U.S. Supreme Court decision. The court said the land-into-trust process should be followed before a tribe claims sovereignty on ancestral territory.
The BIA plans to hold one more public hearing before making a decision on the request.
